France has a comprehensive rail network and Bourges or Nevers are the closest mainline stations to the Chateau. It is also possible to hire a car outside Bourges station or take a train to Nerondes which is 10 mins drive from the Chateau.
Paris stations are Gare de Lyon for Nevers and Gare d’Austerlitz for Bourges. It is possible to transfer from the airport to either station using the Paris metro RER.
Train tickets in France may be booked ahead of arrival via the SNCF website.
Channel crossings: Dover to Calais or Boulogne are the quickest crossings; Crossings to Caen, Le Havre and Cherbourg take longer, but the drive to Charly is slightly shorter.
The journey from Calais via the tunnel is about 5-1/2 hours subject to traffic. Directions are available via the usual route planners.
(Sarah has done this trip and it took around 5 hours)
Visitors from the Channel Islands will disembark at St Malo – the drive – depending on the day will take between 4 ½ and 5 ½ hours. The Best Western Balmoral Hotel, St Malo is an ideal overnight place to stay. Our experience is of landing late pm and staying overnight at the Best Western – leaving early the next morning and arriving Charly at lunchtime.
(Sarah does this trip regularly and finds travel out on Sat evening and then driving on the autoroute on Sunday the quickest option).
Whether looking for a stop over on your way south or a place to stay for a holiday our Chateau is perfectly located to enjoy all that the Cher Valley and the Berry Region has to offer. The Chateau is in the picturesque village of Charly; a stream runs through the centre of the village lined with weeping willows. Walks around the Chateau grounds or in the area are a great way to unwind and relax. The 12th century Charly Church is steeped in history and boasts a stunning painted ceiling, which has been restored to its former glory.
